BarCARES

confidential counseling for the legal community and their families

BarCARES began as a result of a 1991 Quality of Life Survey conducted by the North Carolina Bar Association’s Quality of Life Committee. Finding from this survey led to the formation of the first BarCARES program in 1995, which was a join pilot project of the NC Bar Association’s Lawyer Effectiveness & Quality of Life Committee and the Wake County Bar Association. Since then, the program has grown to include Judicial District Bar or local voluntary Bar groups and law students across the state. The BarCARES Plus program covers paralegals across the state.

BarCARES is a confidential, short-tem intervention program provided cost free to members of participating bar groups and law schools. To learn if your local Judicial District Bar, voluntary bar or law school is participating please contact the BarCARES Program Coordinator at 800-640-0735.

Effective July 2013, BarCARES offers a one-time, three session assessment/referral to any NC Bar Association member who resides in a non-covered BarCARES area and who has never utilized BarCARES services previously (this program offering does not extend to family members of NCBA members). Contact the BarCARES Program Coordinator at 800-640-0735 to inquire about this program.

BarCARES accomplishes its goals by addressing the well-known problems of work and personal stress, clinical depression, anxiety and substance use, as well as work-related issues such as conflict mediation, performance concerns and career dissatisfaction among the licensed Bar of this state. Direct consultation and career reassessment services are rendered by HRC Behavioral Health & Psychiatry, P.A. and their subcontractors across the state.

The BarCARES program is made possible by BarCARES of NC, Inc., the North Carolina Bar Association, the North Carolina Bar Foundation Endowment, Lawyers Insurance agency as well as participating local bar groups, Judicial District Bars and law schools. http://www.ncbar.org/about/barcares

BarCARES, endorsed by the North Carolina Bar Association, differs from the NC State bar Lawyers Assistance Program http://www.nclap.org/

Issues We Can Help With

Stress Management – Each person has coping skills or ways of living with stress that are acquired over the years.

Anxiety Disorders – Anxiety is a normal reaction to stress. It can make it easier to deal with a tense situation, study harder, or keep focused. But when anxiety becomes excessive it can become disabling.

Eating Disorders – Eating disorders are real, treatable medical illnesses. They are not due to bad behavior or lack of will power. They involve serious disturbances in eating behavior.

Parenting – Being a parent is probably the most important job many of us will ever have. Yet many of us are minimally prepared for the enormity of the task of raising our young ones from infancy to adulthood.

Domestic Violence – Domestic violence occurs in a relationship when one partner keeps a position of power and control over the other by the use of fear, intimidation and control.

Substance Abuse – Public health experts tell us that the use and misuse of alcohol and other drugs results in the single biggest health problem in the country today.

We offer consultation for many other issues. Please see our Issues page.
